About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover Picture: The image on the left is of a coronal section from a rat brain in which a group of several hundred layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons in the somatosensory cortex had been labeled via an injection of a lentivirus construct expressing green fluorescent protein. After 10 days, this virus-based labeling technique revealed the axonal projections of the labeled cells in exquisite detail. Axons could be followed over many millimeters, and in this image the projection of the labeled cells to the contralateral hemisphere via the corpus callosum is clearly visible. The image on the right is an enlargement of the area within the box in the left image. The dense lateral projections in both layer 2/3 and in the infragranular layers are well labeled and clearly visible. This labeling technique has been used here (Broser et al.) to investigate the effect of sensory deprivation on the development of the axonal projections of layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons. Cereb Cortex 18(7): 1575-1587.
